Article: Garage Is Home Improvement's Last Frontier
By Chad Tyson
A recent survey commissioned by The Chamberlain Group reveals that nearly
45 percent of Americans have turned to the last possible "room"
in the house to renovate: the garage. Among the most popular uses for
today's garage include a gym/workout room; bedroom/living quarters; child's
playroom; home office; and party room.
The rest of America is not far behind these home improvers. In fact,
18 percent of those polled said they would, or already have plans to,
expand their existing garage. And what are people willing to pay to renovate
the "last frontier"? Up to $5,000, according to 80 percent of
survey respondents. High-rollers -- those willing to spend $25,000 or
more -- accounted for just 3.9 percent of those surveyed.
Experts point out that the average attached two-car garage is 400 sq
ft, larger than most rooms in the average house. Reclaiming and renovating
such a space is much cheaper than building on additional square footage
to the house.
